Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Susan G. Komen For The Cure® was founded in 1982 and was the execution stemming from a promise among sisters. Nancy G. Brinker had promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do all she could to end breast cancer, empowering survivors and advocates alike.

Today, in 2008, with a new name and renewed purpose, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® comprises the world's largest and most forward thinking network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Starting at a grassroots level, these artists look to empower others, strengthen the science for cures, and make sure that all receive quality care. To date, close to $1 billion has been invested in the cause, making the effort the largest source of nonprofit funds focused on the fight against breast cancer.

Over the past 25 years, Komen for the Cure has been involved in establishing earlier detection (75% of women over 40 years old now receive regular mammograms, less than 30% recieved such exams in 1982) and in increase in federal funding for breast cancer research, which now stands at $900 million per year, compared to $30 million in 1982.
